His organizing principle over civilization extended to all learning, and civil institutions, civil justice and so forth. The Greeks identified Thoth with their god of learning and magick, Hermes, and his center of worship (Khnum) they called Hermopolis. As a mediator, he intervened in battles between the gods, and kept the balance by preventing one side from becoming too strong over the other.
